Evernote – keep all your important info in one place.

evernote-logo In a nutshell:

Evernote is a programme and app that you can use to store any information you need to be able to find quickly.

Evernote has radically changed the way I work. You can install on your computer, phone and/or tablet.

I currently use the free version for work (where I have my Naked Website clients stored in individual folders) and to store things like

  • recipes
  • important dates (you can set reminders)
  • films I want to see
  • books I want to read
  • lists of useful people – builders, plumbers….

The great thing about Evernote is that it is searchable – you can help it by tagging all your notes (recipe, paleo, nuts) or whatever but it seems to be able to find things really well without.

Because it syncs with my phone and tablet I can access recipes in shops, or check the measurements of my alcove when I’m in Ikea looking at shelves…..

I use it to store emails with important information on, you can just send the email to Evernote through Outlook, or you can add web pages to Evernote with just a right click. This means I can keep my email down to a bare minimum because all the info I need to store is stored in Evernote – and if my computer dies my information will be safe. Evernote, love it!

Full disclosure – I was not paid or otherwise bribed to write a glowing review for Evernote, I wrote it from the heart because it is working for me. However, if you choose to click one of the links to it on this page I will get points, and points mean prizes.

3 things at once – stopping project overwhelm

This is from The Power of Less by Leo Babauta

  • Chose 3 projects to work on at one time (I use this for personal things I am doing)
  • A project is something that can be completed in a month (my current ones paint the hallway, measure up and order wood for shelves, finish knitting a pair of socks)
  • You cannot add anything else to the list of 3 until they are all finished.

I’ve found this really liberating because instead of sitting paralyzed by all the things I have to do I am able to just focus on 3 things. Because all 3 things have to be finished before a new thing can be started it means I’m not stressing about the jumper I started in 1989, I’m concentrating on things that mean something to me at the moment and things are getting done.

If you try it I suggest doing 3 levels of tasks, a really easy quick one, one that takes a week and one you have to dip in and out of for the month. The 2 first ones get done pretty quickly and think of how gorgeous it feels to just have one thing to finish off that month!

Of course this is not real life, in real life the socks are not the most important things to focus on, but if you are the sort of person who has a few things on the go at once, the method of 3’s might help you get some of them finished.

30 days of creativity – Day 28 – Cat Mummy

30 day creativity challenge Day  28 – No cats were harmed

When I collected my son from school today I had to tell him that the cats were fine, no matter what it looked like.

This idea came about after a drunken conversation with a friend, we know how to have fun.

It was started with a hangover and is not yet finished. There are some mighty fine cat mummys in Bristol museum and I need to go up there and look at them to work out the next step.

It’s fiberglass (I had some of the rolls of stuff they use to fix broken legs), papier mache, newspaper, silver foil, masking tape and dust sheet ripped up and stained in coffee and tea.

cat_mummy

It’s not dry yet so I’m not sure how it will look in the end, it should have some painting on it too but I may just give up at that point. It will live next to Nick Drake, the stuffed duck.

You can see the reason this started and the rest of the days here – http://www.ragbaby.co.uk/1120-2/

And if you want to join in we have a Facebook group – https://www.facebook.com/groups/154085144775381/
Over on Crackbook a bunch of us are going to be working through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: A Course in Enhancing Creativity and Artistic Confidence

The first exercises are to draw a self portrait, your hand and something else I can’t remember so you can see improvement. Then you move onto drawing a vase from a silhouette. You can see the vase exercise here – http://drawright.com/vaceface.htm.

The plan is to do an exercise every Sunday from the book.

Every Record I Own – E is for Brian Eno – The Jezebel Spirit

Brian EnoDavid Byrne ‎– The Jezebel Spirit

eno This has got the David Byrne stamp of funk all over it, you can just smell those Talking Heads. I like side B best, it’s a bit Smiths and a bit Grace Jones but all over Eno and Byrne.

Brian Eno is the new messiah. What would Brian Eno say?

Every Record I Own – D is for Donovan – Cosmic Wheels

Donovan ‎– Cosmic Wheels

cosmic I was never one for coloring in when I was a child and now I prefer to Photoshop than get ink on my fingers. I’ve always loved the cover and inside of Cosmic Wheels and I think when I was little I might have thought that was how it was, the sky was solid, stars were permanent light fixtures and outside of the ether was order in monochrome.
The album itself stays in my collection despite its god bothering misogynistic lyrics purely for the title track because it makes me feel happy.

Every Record I Own – D is for Deep Purple – Made in Japan

Deep Purple ‎– Made In Japan

deep I only noticed Deep Purple because they mentioned Frank Zappa and the Mothers in Smoke on the Water.
Wikipedia say “The lyrics of the song tell a true story: on 4 December 1971 Deep Purple had set up camp in Montreux, Switzerland to record an album. On the eve of the recording session a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino’s theatre. In the middle of Don Preston’s synthesizer solo on “King Kong”, the place suddenly caught fire when somebody in the audience fired a flare gun into the rattan covered ceiling. The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers’ equipment. The “smoke on the water” that became the title of the song referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel.”
I would have heard this a lot at rock night at Woods in Plymouth. Downstairs in Speakeasy was goth and indie and upstairs was rock, you could move between the two. Upstairs rows of people with long hair would line up and greebo, downstairs people snogged a lot.
It’s ok for now and then.
