30 day creativity challenge Day  29 – Particles

Every now and then, because I am a lucky woman, I get to go to the MShed in Bristol and use their Victorian letter press. It’s a huge ornate monstrosity with a lever that you pull to bring the weight down onto paper on top of whatever you are printing.

It was designed for metal letters, tiny little things that are placed in holders that are now only used by artisans and people with a lot more patience than I will ever have.

I was making plates from cardboard and foam but the results just were not what I wanted, so I tried wire. This was made with cut up bits of gardening wire, bent with my trusty Leatherman pliers. I printed and over printed, moving the paper a little each time then colour washed with watercolours.

The inspiration came from a poem by Angela van Son

From dust til dawn

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
that’s when it all started

All my particles woke up
and freestyled their way to
what they thought they should do next

Some entered heaven, to have a look around
Some danced in purgatory, and fought fire with fire
Some joined the spirit, and bathed in its wisdom
Some lay down on the ground, to enjoy the view

And so on, and so on
for there were many particles
I won’t bore you with all their stories

Suffice it to say
they had a ball
and weren’t very happy
when it was time to regroup
and be born again
