30 days of creativity – Day 8 – Deck Chair and Cat

30 day creativity challenge

Day  8; How do you draw straight lines?

It’s a glorious sunny day and my son is away at school camp all week so I have no time constraints. The world is my lobster.

I’m doing battle with drawing again. I feel an improvement since day one and although I like cutting and sticking, this is better for me.

Today I went and sat in my garden and drew the deckchair I have taken the fabric off so I can paint it.

It was a bit of a battle with straight lines and angles but I kept checking outside shapes and found I wasn’t holding my breath quite so much as I was a few days ago. Straight lines have become hugely difficult, they veer off or around corners that are not there, they need discipline.

I didn’t finish the deckchair, which is a bit of a cop out but I don’t actually care. I didn’t finish it because I realised too late I was sitting too close to it, I’d have to turn around to draw the rest of it, which would cock up the perspective. However,  I drew something that was reasonably like the thing that was in front of me.

day8

All the time I was drawing, the cats were leaping around chasing innocent insects and things that are not there. I caught Scumspawn in his waiting mode. I’m most pleased today with the 2 second sketch of the cat, I have caught his bones and attitude and I am chuffed.

You can see the reason this started and the rest of the days here – http://www.ragbaby.co.uk/1120-2/

And if you want to join in we have a Facebook group – https://www.facebook.com/groups/154085144775381/
Over on Crackbook a bunch of us are going to be working through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: A Course in Enhancing Creativity and Artistic Confidence

The first exercises are to draw a self portrait, your hand and something else I can’t remember so you can see improvement. Then you move onto drawing a vase from a silhouette. You can see the vase exercise here – http://drawright.com/vaceface.htm.

The plan is to do an exercise every Sunday from the book.
