30 days of creativity – Day 9 – Comedy at the Wardrobe

30 day creativity challenge

Day  9; I do wish people would stay still.

This is my second attempt at day 9, yesterday I drew the cats, or at least tried to. They can sense when I am looking at them and they keep moving. I did manage a sort of Duchamp Cat Descending a Staircase type thing which wasn’t really worth blogging about.

Day 9 also didn’t take 30 minutes. It took as long as my boyfriend took to go and get drinks in the interval. We were at the Wardrobe Theatre for a bargain comedy night, it’s where comedians practice their act for the Edinburgh Festival.

At the Wardrobe (which is a little upstairs room painted in gorgeous dismal khaki and muggy blue) I discovered that Hendricks Gin, the one that comes in the poison bottle, is traditionally served with cucumber. My lovely healthy drink had all gone by the interval though.

This was a row of girls who started off texting so were nice and still, then they started moving and talking, how dare they!

The one on the left gave me particular trouble but I did manage to get the set of her shoulders. I totally enjoyed drawing the nice round bum of her neighbour and the lovely long hair of the girl next to her. I was a bit scared to fuck it up from this great starting point though so I was glad when I had to stop.

The act we saw next was Ian Cognito, who I vaguely remember talking to at some bar about a decade ago. At the time he was in a very mauldin mood because he thought he didn’t do a good set, we disagreed and drank a lot more to celebrate.

You know when you are in the pub and it’s well past bedtime there is often a mad, ranty ‘I was born in 1958 you know, it was different then’ type man. One who shouts suddenly and looks as though if he didn’t badly need his pint he might just throw it at someone. The type of man you look at then look quickly away, not wanting any eye contact or dealings with him whatsoever for he has ‘volatile drunk lunatic’ written all over him.

That is Ian Cognito, but he also peppers that random insane ranting about his upbringing with really really rude jokes. Properly obscene, unrepeatable in most places, very very funny. The audience were a bit young to get his references to Opal Fruits and the Liberal Party in the 80’s but the laughed anyway, maybe through sheer fear but I suspect that they found him very very funny too. Ian Cognito, born in 1958, likes a wank but it comes out as powder now he is so old. You get the jist. He is famous for being banned from more clubs than any other comedian and it was a real treat to see him last night.

There is a lot of swearing 🙂

And if you want to join in we have a Facebook group – https://www.facebook.com/groups/154085144775381/
Over on Crackbook a bunch of us are going to be working through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain: A Course in Enhancing Creativity and Artistic Confidence

The first exercises are to draw a self portrait, your hand and something else I can’t remember so you can see improvement. Then you move onto drawing a vase from a silhouette. You can see the vase exercise here – http://drawright.com/vaceface.htm.

The plan is to do an exercise every Sunday from the book.
